Mount Rainier is one of the places that you could consider as, “deceptive beauty.” The landscape is just breathtaking! Everything comes together so beautiful, but with a hidden monster laying beneath it all. Atop this buried beast you will find waterfalls, hikes, a railroad and so much more. You may be wondering what I am referring to when I say, “monster.” No, there is not a dragon living in the hollow of the mountain, something with similar affects though. Mount Rainier is actually an active volcano! Don’t you agree this adds some magnificence to the whole place? We sure thought so. With that said, Eric asked us… “What is deceptive beauty to you?”

Eric

Eric started this question off with an example. Remember Indiana Jones, Raiders of the Lost Ark, in the first scene where he takes the gold statue? Its deceptive beauty persuades him to take it, only to be run down by a giant boulder. Another illustration Eric depicted for us was the moth and the flame, “Stay away from the light!” “I can’t help it, it’s so beautiful… ZAP!”

Wally

Wally mentioned before we started recording how a rose is deceptive beauty. It stands out so bright and elegant, except when you go to pick it, your pricked by its sharp thorns. Something else that he shared later was the case of skiing and its treachery. He put on his skis for the first time and all a sudden he was moving! His concern came from the fact that he did not will himself to go, he was already on his way down the hill.

Autumn

I feel like one of the best forms of deceptive beauty is right there in our television screen. Hollywood. If there were ever a place painted to be so glamorous and fantastical, it would be Hollywood. However, it’s not always what it’s cracked up to be. Living in the limelight always having to be “on” and never getting a moment to just be has got to be exhausting. From the mouths of many celebrities, it can be a dark and stressful life.

Jeremy

Our guest, Jeremy, also brought up the deceptive beauty that can be skiing. Some trails can appear so pristine and enticing with all that fresh powder. All the same, no ride is worth the risk of an avalanche. You have to be wise whenever you go and take on nature. Be aware of your surroundings and what you are capable of. It is never a shameful thing to turn back.

Our Take Away

Wally wants to find himself on the John Muir trail. He’s realized how critical John was to our national parks today.

I blurted out that I wouldn’t want to go because of my fear the volcano would erupt while I’m there. Although that is a silly thought, and there is so much to do there.

Speaking of, Jeremy mentioned that exact thing. There is more to Mount Rainier than just the mountain. He let me know how ridiculous my explanations were and encouraged me to make the stop. Explore all that this great park has to offer.

Eric brought up how beautiful the waterfalls are. Something he wished we could have talked more about. The whole place is a true beauty, but remember what it really is 😉
