The city of Rio de Janeiro is the "Marvelous City". It is the Brazilian destination. Rio is the second most populated city in the country of Brazil in South America. It is the sixth largest population of all American metropolitan areas. This city was originally founded in 1565 by the Portuguese as the regional seat for the Portuguese Empire. In 1763 it became the state capital of Brazil of the Portuguese Empire. It was then the capital of the Empire of Brazil, after Brazil won it's independence, until 1960 when the capital was transferred to Brasilia.

Being within a tropical savannah climate Rio de Janeiro is home to beautiful birds, lovely beaches, cruise ports, and the famous statue, Christ the Redeemer. Many travel from all over the world to enjoy this beautiful place. It is home to the 2016 Summer Olympics, being the first time a South American country would host this global event.
