The University of Southern California, SC to those who know, is the oldest private research university in California. USC is normally ranked at the top of the “dream college” survey. Like they say, location, location, location. Affiliated with the Methodist church until 1952, the university founders set forth that, “No student will be denied because of race.” This led to a student body that was diverse and integrated from early on. Football started at USC in 1888 and it was a natural fit. Originally called the “USC Methodists,” in 1912 a sports writers comment that the team had fought like “Trojans” led to the new mascot moniker for the school. The Trojans have 11 Football National Championships and 6 Heisman Trophy winners to its credit. When the Olympics came to Los Angeles in 1932 the Coliseum built for the opening ceremonies was across the street from USC and became their home after the games. Today the tradition of excellence continues with the shout of “Ride that Horse.”
