Acadia National Park is located off the Atlantic coast and marked by woodland, rocky beaches and glacier-scoured granite peaks such as Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the United States' east coast. As the capitol of Maryland, Annapolis is rich with history. At one point it was the nation's capitol and was were George Washington signed his commission to be commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. The Razorbacks, also known as the Hogs, is the name of the college football team at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The Razorbacks have a legacy of greatness, including being the only team to go through the regular season and a bowl game undefeated and being awarded the Football Writers Association of America National Championship. Razorback fans have many traditions some of which are the "Calling of the Hogs", and the "Running through the A".
Many stories and movies have been made about the lost city of Atlantis, a mythical Island nation. Growing up didn’t you play with all the neighborhood kids having the greatest of adventures, discovering new worlds? Adventurers and scientists have searched for and tried to prove Atlantis’s existence for thousands of years. Did it really exist? We may never know. In 1839, the settlement around the Colorado River in Texas was incorporated under the name of “Waterloo,” but it was changed shortly after to “Austin” in honor of Stephen F. Austin who was the Republic of Texas’ first secretary of state, also known as the “Father of Texas.” Today, Austin is known as a center for business and technology with many Fortune 500 companies putting headquarters or regional offices there such as Google, Apple Inc., Amazon, IBM, and Intel. The Aztec calendar consists of two calendars, one for a day count (tonalpohualli) and the other for a year count (xiuhpohualli). The xiuhpohualli was for agricultural purposes and telling them the best time to plant their crops, and the tonalpohualli was the religious calendar and told them when to consult the God's. This painting is unique in the Dowdle Folk Art collection in that it is Eric's only round painting and puzzle.
Less than 200 miles from the continental United States sits the British Colony of the Bahamas. The largest city in the Bahamas is Nassau which, due to its proximity, has become the top Caribbean cruise port. The history has been a mix of European governorship claims and it was even claimed as a Pirate Republic for a while. When tourism to Cuba was halted in the 1960’s it was a boon for the Bahamas. Every Fall near the Sandia mountains of New Mexico balloon enthusiasts gather from all over the world to witness something spectacular.
